Bobolink Field Trip

Every year we make a beer with a very special story. Bobolink Saison is brewed to support the Bobolink Odyssey, a project that studies Bobolink migration patterns, as well as the relationship between the Bobolink and Vermont agriculture.

We donate a portion of sales from this beer towards the purchase of GPS trackers for the birds, a much needed piece of technology that tracks their migration patterns. They reveal the amazing feats by Bobolinks while on migration including a three day non-stop flight from the coast of the mid-Atlantic states to South America (a 2200 mile flight).

Recently, we had the opportunity to get out in the field with Noah Perlut who runs the project. A crisp, sun-dappled morning at Shelburne Farms provided the perfect backdrop to see this research in action

Bobolinks place their nests right on the grounds of fields, nestled below the long grass. Vermont farmers, including those at Shelburne Farms take care to delay their plowing in order to not disturb the nests, and keep the Bobolinks safe.

We were so lucky to see (and hold!) these tiny birds, and observe how our beer connects to continued research about their adventures and life cycles.

A big thank you to Noah and his colleagues for all of their work, and allowing us the opportunity to learn more about what they do.
